Poinsettia
Euphorbia pulcherrima

The Poinsettia was named after Joel Robert Poinsett, the United States’ first ambassador to Mexico, after he found the plant growing in Southern Mexico and introduced it into the U.S in 1825.

Native to Mexico and Central America, poinsettias are also known as the Mexican flame leaf or Christmas star. Even though it is the number one flowering, potted plant in the United States, it is mostly known for its showy display during the winter holidays. The plant’s beautiful, brightly colored bracts (often referred to as leaves) are perfect for decorating the home and adds just the right touch of color to your holiday festivities.

Caring for your Poinsettia

'Peter Star' PoinsettiaIdeal conditions for poinsettias will be found in locations that receive at least 6 hours of natural sunlight everyday and has protection from direct rays of the hot afternoon sun. Sheer curtains can provide ample protection against the fading of its vibrant, colorful bracts. In addition, temperatures should stay between 65°-70° F, and the plant should be protected against dry air and heat from air vents and fireplaces.

Poinsettias are often mistakenly referred to as being toxic. This is not the case; however, since the primary component of its white sap is latex, those that are allergic to latex should avoid contact with the sap. In addition, poinsettias are not meant to be edible, and common sense should be used when in reach of children and pets.
