Select long-stemmed blossoms that are just opening or partially opened, and cut in the early morning or late afternoon. Using sharp, scissor-action, pruning shears, cut the stem at a 45-degree angle just above a five-leaflet leaf.
Often forgotten as a valuable landscape plant, roses are again taking their rightful place. Many varieties have a naturally sprawling or mounding habit. Either way, they are the perfect for those hard to fill or hard to tend corners of the garden.
A rose of any other variety is a beauty, but a fragrant rose is a treasure. Plant along paths and walks, around patio seating areas, and near windows to allow their perfume to waft indoors on those sultry summer days and nights.
With a single, sturdy trunk, topiary-like pom poms are an elegant accent for lining walkways, driveways, and sidewalks. Also use as single container specimens on either side of an entryway like floral butlers.
Mini Roses allow anyone with even the most limited space to have a rose garden. While they can be planted in the ground, their strength is as a potted plant on balconies and patios or on a sunny windowsill.
A rose covered trellis or arbor is a fragrant treat to pass by. Naturally climbing rose varieties can be attached to any form of support or trellis such as wood lattice or strung wires by gently fastening with a loose, flexible tie.
Knock Out is a compact shrub rose that is resistant to black-spot and other diseases. Knock Out boasts continuous, single blooms through three seasons and needs no dead-heading, making it an excellent choice for hedges and borders.
