Veggie Variety Descriptions

Our line of veggies are new and heirloom vegetables that have been specially selected for their outstanding performance and unusual characteristics. Scroll below for descriptions and culture notes by alphabetic variety.

Perennial Varieties

There are a few vegetables that are perennials. Once they are established, they will yield for many years. Fortunately for gardeners, they include some of the handsomest vegetables:

Ornamental Vegetables

There are some vegetables so attractive when growing they are considered Ornamental. They look beautiful in container gardens, in beds, used in edging, in formal hedges or as bedding plants. These varieties are useful in small gardens where there is a limited amount of space.

Broccoli romanesco 'Shannon'
(Brassica oleracea ‘Shannon’)

This unusual broccoli is an Italian delicacy with a nut like texture that is great for salads and steaming. Heads are 6-7" across, chartreuse, and made up of many beautiful, spiraled, peaked florets. Harvest in the late summer to fall and use fresh or cold store for future use. Sun. Water regularly.

CLASSIC MESCLUN—MIXED SALAD GREENS

Sweet lettuces and tender greens are pre-mixed in just the right proportions so that your garden yields a melange of salad flavors. Our mesclun includes Arugula, Chervil, Endive, Mache, four lettuces (Oak Leaf, Prizeleaf, Red Salad Bowl, and Green Ice0, Radicchio, and Upland Cress. Rich colors and diverse textures make this gourmet mix a treat for the eyes as well as for the pallet! Full sun. Water regularly.

CORN ‘RUBY QUEEN’

This amazingly sweet, new corn is truly red! You can enjoy Ruby Queen at tow stages—pick it when it is blush-red for maximum sweetness, or let it ripen to full red to develop a rich, old fashioned corn flavor. The meaty ears are 8" long with 18 rows of juicy, tender kernels. Plants are 7’ tall and bear two ears apiece. Steam or microwave to enhance the delectable flavor and color. Red tassels and stalks make fantastic autumn decorations. Full sun. Water regularly.

CORN ‘SERENDIPITY’

Serendipity is an extraordinarily sweet variety that produces beautiful bicolor ears with medium green husks. Its ears average 8" in length and are bursting with 16-18 rows of flavorful, sugary enhanced, tender kernels. Extended holding ability. Full sun. Water regularly.

CUCUMBER ‘LEMON’

Small, rounded, cucumbers with yellow skins and a fresh, lemon flavor! A must have for any gourmand’s garden, lemon cucumbers are as beautiful as they are delicious. Fruits have crisp flesh, soft seeds, and taste best when harvested small (2-3" long) and eaten fresh off the vine! Add color and flavor to summer salads. Full sun. Water regularly.

EGGPLANT ‘GREEN GODDESS’

These pale green eggplants are exceptionally sweet, tender, and mild. Fruits are 6-8" long and 2-3" in diameter. Plants are disease resistant and extremely productive. Excellent grilled. Full sun. Water regularly.

EGGPLANT ‘MILLIONAIRE HYBRID’

These stunning Japanese type eggplants are as beautiful as they are flavorful! Slender fruits, 1-2" across and 8-12" long, are borne early on upright plants. Interior flesh is nearly seedless and never bitter. Use the sweet slices on the grill or in any of your favorite eggplant recipes. Delicious in stir fried dishes. Full sun. Water regularly.

EGGPLANT ‘SNOWY WHITE’

This striking cultivar bears snowy white fruits that are 4-6" in length and 2-3" in diameter. Interior flesh is also white and is the sweetest of all eggplants! Fruit appears early and is continuously borne throughout the season. Full sun. Water regularly.

LEEK ‘VARNA’

Europe’s classic fall favorite, the leek is quickly gaining popularity here in America! Leeks are a large, upright, non-bulbing type of onion. When mature long, think, blanched stems are topped with 1-11/2" wide leaves. When cooked, leeks lend a creamy texture to soups and quiches, and are sweeter than onions. Harvest anytime for fresh leek flavor in salads and cooked dishes. Full sun. Water regularly.

LETTUCE 'ROMAINE'

Romaine (Cos) lettuce has long, broad, upright leaves which bunch as they mature. Crisp and juicy with a sweetness unmatched by other lettuce types. Space about 10" apart. Provide full sun and deep, regular watering. The necessary component for Caesar Salad, and excellent for all other uses including stuffing and braising.

LETTUCE 'MINI GREEN'

Easiest to grow, the leaves of the heads do not close tightly but form an open rosette. You can pick as needed for salads without harvesting the whole plant. Space about 8" apart for full size heads. Provide full sun and deep, regular watering. A perfect salad and sandwich lettuce and excellent with other mixed greens an herbs.

MELON ‘SAVOR’

This is the sweetest French melon! The melons are small, less than 2 lb., and of the classic Charantais type—faintly ribbed, with a pale green exterior with dark green markings. Flesh is deep orange, aromatic, and sweet. Fruit should be picked when the skin is still green, but gives a little when pressed. Do not wait for the outer skin to turn orange, as that is an indication of over-ripeness. Full sun. Water regularly.

ONION ‘WALLA WALLA SWEET’

Though native to Walla Walla, WA, this sweet and mild onion is celebrated throughout the Western United States! Extra large bulbs are incomparably sweet due to a sulfur content that is less than half that of a yellow onion. These summertime sweets are delicious fresh, in salads and atop pizzas and pastas. Can be stored up to six weeks in a cool, ventilated location. Or slice and freeze for year-round enjoyment. Full Sun. Water regularly.

PEA ‘SUGAR LACE’

Sugar Lace is an exciting new sugar snap pea that has plump and string-less pods! Semi-leafless plants are self-supporting and so require no staking. Peas are produced in double pods which means more peas for less effort. These peas are ready to eat fresh off the plant! Full sun. Water regularly.

PEPPER 'BELL BOY'

Sweet, 4 1/2" x 3 1/2" blocky shaped fruit ready in 70 days, and ripens from green to red. Disease resistant; peppers require full sun and well-drained soil. Fertilize twice a month and stake if necessary. All purpose sweet bell pepper for use in recipes either raw or cooked, and especially excellent for stuffing.

PEPPER ‘CHILE DE ARBOL’

The pointed pods of this Cayenne-type pepper have given it the Mexican nickname "Bird’s Beak". Fruits are 2-3" long and thin-fleshed, maturing to a dark red. Beautiful red peppers can be used in decorative wreathes or dried and ground into chili powder. Full sun. Water regularly.

PEPPER ‘CHOCOLATE BEAUTY’

A gourmet cook’s delight! These medium to large, 3 and 4-lobed hybrid bell peppers mature from rich green to a unique chocolate brown. Extremely sweet and tasty and resistant to Tobacco Mosaic Virus. Full sun. Water regularly.

PEPPER ‘HABENERO’

The hottest of hot, these peppers are reportedly 1000 times hotter than Jalepeno peppers! Lantern-shaped, 1" x 2" pods, with thin, wrinkled, green flesh, ripen to a lovely golden orange. High yielding plants grow to 36" tall. A Caribbean favorite, these peppers are used to flavor salsas and sauces. Medium sun. Water regularly.

PEPPER ‘IVORY HYBRID BELL’

This ivory-white pepper was recently released and is certain to be an eye-catcher on any gourmet’s table! High yields of medium-sized peppers with a mild flavor. Good virus resistance. Full sun. Water regularly.

PEPPER ‘LILAC HYBRID BELL’

This lavender hybrid bell will add unique color to your recipes! Fruits are 3-4-lobed and mature from ivory to lavender to red (with an ivory interior). Medium-sized plants produce a very high yield. Full sun. Water regularly.

PEPPER ‘POBLANO’

This large, heart-shaped pepper is 4-5" long and 2" wide. It is called Poblano when fresh, and Ancho when dried. Mildly hot, dark green fruits ripen to a deep mahogany red and are delicious stuffed, roasted, and added to tomato and egg dishes. Peppers mature in about 65 days from transplanting. Full sun. Water regularly.

PEPPER ‘SUPER CHILI’

One of the most pungent chili peppers, Super Chili is an All-America Selections winner! These highly ornamental, semi-compact plants bear 2.5" elongated fruits with plenty of hot chili flavor. Bred for increased yields, bring plants in where winters are severe to have a continuous supply of zesty peppers all winter long. Ripens from green to orange to red. Ideal for container, patio, and windowsill gardens. Full sun. Water regularly.

PEPPER ‘TABASCO’

Exceptionally hot—one of the hottest peppers ever developed! Bred and used to make the famous Tabasco hot sauce. Fruits, ripening from light yellow-green to red, are easily harvested. Vigorous plants have high yields when in direct sun with good drainage. Full sun. Water regularly.

RADICCHIO ‘ALTO’

A beautiful and gourmet salad vegetable of Italian origin, radicchio is pleasingly bitter and very appealing. Behaves like a slow growing lettuce with heads that form without being cut back or forced. Radicchio ‘Alto’ has a nutty flavor that is a refreshing addition to salads and stir-fries. Full sun. Water regularly.

SHALLOT ‘FRENCH RED’

These mid-sized, red shallots are an indispensable staple in French cuisine! Excellent, mild, onion flavor is sweetened by cooking but flavorful raw as well. Red skins add aesthetic appeal, both in the garden, and in the kitchen. Harvest when the tops begin to drop and store in a cool, dry place. Full sun. Water regularly.

SQUASH ‘HEART OF GOLD’

A beautiful and flavorful acorn squash! Medium sized (4" by 5") fruits are borne on vigorous, space-saving semi-bush plants. Green and orange mottled skin makes them ideal for ornamental use and deep orange flesh is rich and delicious! Full sun. Water regularly.

STRAWBERRY ‘EVERSWEET’

Amazingly productive, Eversweet bears strawberries throughout the heat of summer—even when temperatures rise above 100 degrees Fahrenheit! Berries are exceptionally sweet and large, with a delectable flavor reminiscent of heirloom varieties. A truly outstanding performer, Eversweet’s production surpasses than of any other cultivated strawberry! Full sun. Water regularly.

STRAWBERRY 'SEQUOIA'

Sequoia is an ever-bearing strawberry that grows fruit producing runners extending from the main plant. Also, they have a longer growing season than June bearing strawberry plants. The suggested planting method for ever-bearing strawberry plants is on mounds of soil that are approximately one foot apart. Provide full sun and deep, regular watering; soil should always be lightly moist. Strawberries are a sweet addition to any garden, and besides being a delicious treat, they have great nutritional value. However you choose to serve them, you will eagerly anticipate the arrival of strawberries each season.

TOMATILLO ‘TOMA VERDE’

This lovely tomatillo produces an abundance of papery-husked, green-fleshed fruits that resemble large green cherry tomatoes. Remove the papery husks and use cooked or fresh in salsas. Freezes very well. Tomatillos can grow anywhere that a tomato can grow, and due to their large size, should be spaced 2-3’ apart. Harvest when paper husk loosens and fruit turns from green pale yellow. Full sun. Water regularly.

TOMATO ‘BEEF KING’

Beef King is a giant beefsteak tomato with excellent interior color and superior flavor. Sturdy plants yield firm, 10 - 12 oz. fruits consistently throughout the season. Plants are disease resistant and not prone to radial stem cracking. Indeterminate. VFFT. Full sun. Water regularly.

TOMATO ‘BETTER BOY HYBRID’

A miracle of modern breeding technology, Better Boy combines traditionally delicious flavor with today’s disease resistance! A mid-season tomato with plump, scarlet, tomatoes that often weigh a pound or more. Tremendously productive, Better Boy bears a bounty of flavorful fruits that are protected from sun-scald by heavy foliage. Indeterminate. VFNASt. Full sun. Water regularly.

TOMATO 'BEEF MASTER'

Tomatoes are the most popular and frequently planted garden vegetables. Extremely large-fruited beefsteak-type with hybrid vigor. High in vitamins A and C. Indeterminate and disease resistant; does best with staking. Provide full sun and deep but infrequent waterings. Very meaty, lightly ribbed fruit. VFAN

TOMATO ‘BIG BEEF’

This All-America Selections Winner produces large 10-12 oz fruits that are firm, juicy, and flavorful. Fruits are borne both high and low on vines, increasing productivity and resulting in heavy yields in all regions. A hybrid variety with fruits that are disease-resistant and not prone to cracking. Indeterminate. VFFNASt. Full sun. Water regularly.

TOMATO ‘BIG BEEF HYBRID’

One of the sweetest tomatoes you will ever taste, nothing compares to the mouthwatering flavor of Miracle Sweet! Indeterminate, vigorous plants produce an abundance of 5-6 oz fruits that ripen uniformly. Plants are best supported by tall stakes. Excellent disease resistance. VFNTASt. Full sun. Water regularly.

TOMATO ‘BRANDYWINE’

This heirloom Amish variety, dating back to 1885, features one of the finest flavored large tomatoes ever offered. Striking pink, beefsteak shaped fruits of 1-1.5 lbs. have juicy, tender, flesh. Plants are very erect and potato-leafed. Indeterminate. Full sun. Water regularly.

TOMATO ‘BRANDYWINE YELLOW

This popular heirloom-derived variety was introduced in 1995 and its delicious, orange fruits have been a favorite ever since. Tomatoes are large and have a rich, gourmet flavor similar to regular Brandywine. Plants resemble potato vines. Indeterminate. Full sun. Water regularly.

TOMATO ‘EARLY GIRL HYBRID’

One of the earliest slicing tomatoes, Early Girl continuously produces flavorful, slightly flattened, crimson fruits with an average weight of 4-6 oz. Beautiful blemish-resistant skin and firm flesh make this variety pleasing to both the pallet and the eye! Indeterminate. VFF. Full sun. Water regularly.

TOMATO ‘FRENCH BEEFSTEAK’

A prolific, French heirloom variety, whose beefsteak-type fruits measure a full 4" across! Flesh is soft and flavorful. Expect large yields from this superb producer. Indeterminate. Full sun. Water regularly.

TOMATO ‘GREAT WHITE BEEFSTEAK’

This magnificent, large, "white" (very pale yellow) is characterized by low acidity and very few seeds. Fruits are protected under vigorous, heavy foliage and plants are drought tolerant and resistant to cracking. Indeterminate. Full sun. Water regularly.

TOMATO ‘LA ROMA GOLD’

A compact bush variety that bears beautiful golden Roma-type tomatoes that are rich in flavor and in color. Prolific production of pear-shaped fruits with few seeds that are perfect for sauces and salads. Bounty of yield merits staking, to prevent plants from breaking. Determinate. VF. Full sun. TOMATO ‘MATT’S WILD CHERRY’

These small cherry tomatoes are bursting with flavor and are renowned for possessing a sugar content higher than that of any other tomato variety! Deep red fruits are smooth-skinned and indescribably delicious. Delightful fresh in salads and salsas. Indeterminate. Full sun. Water regularly.

TOMATO ‘MIRACLE SWEET HYBRID’

One of the sweetest tomatoes you will ever taste, nothing compares to the mouthwatering flavor of Miracle Sweet! TOMATO 'RED CHERRY'

Prune plant early in season to encourage heavy yields. Full sun and deep watering, feed with fish emulsion. Exceptional home garden variety great for snacking on or used in salads.

TOMATO ‘RED CURRANT’

One of the smallest tomatoes at ¼ inch in diameter, these pea-sized fruits possess a crunchy, fruity flavor that is ideal for salads and snacks. Vigorous vines produce 15-20 fruits per branching cluster. A multitude of flowers make for a beautiful display in late June. Indeterminate. Full sun. Water regularly.

TOMATO ‘VALENCIA’

Valencia’s bright orange fruits are bursting with full tomato flavor! Round, smooth, nearly seedless fruits average 8-10 oz. This mid-season, summer staking tomato is among the best for flavor and texture. Indeterminate. Full sun. Water regularly.

TOMATO ‘YELLOW PEAR’

A petite, distinctive salad tomato, Yellow Pear fruits are ¾-1 oz., lemon yellow, and pear-shaped. These beautiful and unusual tomatoes have a mild flavor and are a focal point when served whole in salads or in lightly cooked summer vegetable dishes. Indeterminate. Full sun. Water regularly.

WATERMELON ‘YELLOW ROSE’

Yellow Rose bears beautiful, bright, yellow to orange watermelons that taste as good as they look! Medium-sized, slightly elongated melons have light green rinds with dark green stripes. Melons are borne on strong and productive vines that have shown increased tolerance to many diseases. Full sun. Water regularly.
