Ferns

Ferns come in a multitude of sizes and shapes from miniature terrarium types to giant trees over 20' tall. With many different types of fronds, they are in general prized for their graceful, lacy, tropical appearance. Nearly all prefer medium to low light situations with regular to ample watering. Some varieties are hardy to below freezing such as Mother fern, Holly fern, Lace fern, Tasmanian Tree fern, Leather fern and Autumn fern. The more tropical types do best with temperatures not lower than 40°. Nearly all can be grown as houseplants as well as outside.

Ferns add a sense of coolness and tropical isle feeling to a shady garden spot, shaded patio, entryway or even an enclosed atrium. Combined with other shade loving, blooming plants, a true sense of a tropical paradise is easy to accomplish. Use them directly in the ground, in containers or even hanging baskets to create that extra special accent for a tropical hideaway!
